The Premier.

Yesterday it was the NY Premier of the Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby.

The stars retained the elegance and style of their fictional counterparts. Carey Mulligan (apologies for my previous blog posts where I’ve been spelling her name as Carrie…) certainly was the leading lady of the night in her red Lanvin Dress.

The tailored seams of the dress remind me of an art deco inspired skyscraper, giving Carey a statuesque and elegant look. Plus red is always brilliant on blondes.

The boys looked equally as hot, both Leo and Tobey Maguire opted for well-tailored petrol blue suits and ties combined with crisp white shirts.

There has been some concerns over the film, adapting such a famous novel is always hazardous as everyone who has read the book will have their own idea, image and interpretation of the story and characters. Some Fitzgerald fans are worried that Luhrmann will concentrate too much on elaborate and extravagant costumes and settings rather than the real beauty; the storyline. Which is said to be: America coming into its own. For me personally, however, I believe that the films should not be judged on their novel counterparts. Reading is a very personal thing, cinematic adaptation is a shared experience. It will not take away from the novel, but it will be a different way to enjoy the characters and story. That’s just my experience and that’s why I always read the book first so I can make my own mind up before being influenced by the characters on-screen.

But let me know what you think?!

The party’s over.

So you’ve partied with Gatsby, it was amazing, your outfit was a success (you’re welcome) but now it’s the morning after…

Sometimes no amount of makeup will cover those tell tale signs of a great night, so bring on the shades. I got these from Camden Market for £5.50 (they were £6 but my darling boyfriend managed to haggle them down a whole 50p…). They’re inspired by the Celluloid style popular in twenties and popular still in twenty-thirteen.

The End

Now it’s your turn boys, time to smarten up!

The roaring twenties were a time of post war indulgence, whilst the women sparkled in their sequins, men dazzled in their suits. Still to this day who doesn’t love a man in a suit?!

Ted Baker have even brought out a suit called ‘The Gatsby’!

Maybe a suit is a tad formal for most parties these days so how about instead getting your Jay Gatz fix with the help of these shoes:

Brogues have stood the test of time, for this season choose pale colours, turn up those Chino’s and make sure your socks contrast!

Here’s a fun fact (I’m aware I am edging towards sounding like a teacher right now but bear with me) the trousers; Oxford Bags, were made popular by the prohibition at Oxford university of the wearing of knickerbockers. The students wore the baggy styled trousers as it enabled them to wear their knickerbockers underneath. Those rebellious Oxford boys eh! See I told you it was fun…

The GREAT Gatsby.

“I was not alone – fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbour’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars.”

(F.Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby,1925)

I thought this week I’d try experimenting with my blog and give it a theme. That theme will be 1920’s fashion inspired by the upcoming release of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ out mid May (just in time for my birthday!) Fashion and cinema have always influenced each other and this film has certainly impacted what we will be wearing this year.

Anyone who’s read the book will know just how beautifully written it is, I wondered how on earth they would portray such imagination and beauty on-screen? Well, the answer seems to in the combination of Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada, who together, created the beautiful costumes worn by Carrie Mulligan and Leonardo Dicaprio. In an interview they emphasised how their vision was created by ‘Baz seeing the past with modern eyes whilst Miuccia does the opposite and sees the future through vintage eyes’ (Nakisha Williams:2013). However such costumes don’t need explaining, they speak for themselves…

The jewellery worn by the actors is designed by Tiffany & Co in a special collection called Zeigfeld.
