The GREAT Gatsby.

“I was not alone – fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbour’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars.”

(F.Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby,1925)

I thought this week I’d try experimenting with my blog and give it a theme. That theme will be 1920’s fashion inspired by the upcoming release of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ out mid May (just in time for my birthday!) Fashion and cinema have always influenced each other and this film has certainly impacted what we will be wearing this year.

Anyone who’s read the book will know just how beautifully written it is, I wondered how on earth they would portray such imagination and beauty on-screen? Well, the answer seems to in the combination of Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada, who together, created the beautiful costumes worn by Carrie Mulligan and Leonardo Dicaprio. In an interview they emphasised how their vision was created by ‘Baz seeing the past with modern eyes whilst Miuccia does the opposite and sees the future through vintage eyes’ (Nakisha Williams:2013). However such costumes don’t need explaining, they speak for themselves…

The jewellery worn by the actors is designed by Tiffany & Co in a special collection called Zeigfeld.

Feeling inspired? Well tomorrow I will be looking at what to wear if you’re invited to one of Jay Gatsby’s infamous party’s…
