Ask Estelle // Harriet’s Helpline

Harriet asked:

“Hi Estelle

First of all can I just say that I love your blog!

So I’m getting married next summer, and I am just trying to get a feel for the general bridesmaid trends that are out there at the moment. The wedding ‘vibe’ is sort of festival-ly, nothing too posh.

Thanks in advance!”

Now many of you who know me personally will know that I have a vested interest in this particular ‘Ask Estelle’ since I have the honor of being one of Haz’s bridesmaids… so no pressure then!

This will be my fourth trip down the aisle as a bridesmaid, however my previous experiences won’t help us here unless you fancy dressing us all up in bonnets Harriet?

So I’ve turned to celebrity weddings for some inspiration. Now obviously the most talked about wedding this year has been Kimye’s, in which the bridesmaids wore white?!

I wouldn’t personally go for this, call me old fashioned but the bride should be the only one in white on her wedding day. However I love the cut of these dresses, my favorite feature being the ruched netting which has been wrapped over the base fabric. Muted tones are very in vogue right now, how about an off white colour, a beige, a greige or a pale pink?

Kourtney and Khole’s dresses are a bit too formal for a festival inspired do. So instead let us draw inspiration here from the wedding of OC creator Josh Schwartz and Jill Stonerock whose ceremony was a far cry from the Kardashian’s. Rachel Bilson collaborated with Brian Reyes to design these flowing, bohemian, beauties…

They have a relaxed rustic feel to them and the heather bouquet is the perfect complement to these Grecian green gowns.

Kimono’s are an essential when it comes to Festivals and why should your wedding be any different?! Here’s how the style translates into bridesmaid dresses…I think we can draw the line at wellies though…

Lace is always a classic, however this trend translates best onto dresses which end just below the knee.a2837f0dad3990def83c4cef646e2f6a

This serene simple dress is defiantly one of my favorites, minus the colour of course…

So there you have it, the bridesmaid dress options out there are endless, as long as you think outside the box. You’ll have noticed that I haven’t featured the likes of Debenhams or Coast aka the obvious choices. Now don’t get me wrong they’ll do the job and do the job well. However I’m guessing you’ve already looked there and haven’t found what you were looking for, hence why you’ve written in.

Clearly it’s important to get our dresses right (remember there’s seven of us and only one of you…) but in all seriousness it’s your dress that will be the focal point, not ours, so get thinking about that!

Ask Estelle // Cora’s Concern…

Cora asked: Estelle, I am forever doomed to struggle with finding a good pair of summery shoes (not sandals) – I want some cool, comfy shoes that I can wear in the day and night (no heels please). Can you help me?

Cora look I mean walk no further until your feet are firmly in these beauties…

Oh and did I mention they’re on sale!

These understated classic’s with their simple gold detailing are a perfect transitional day to night staple.

Want something a bit more racy? Then show some toe in these…

Or how about the peep toe? A happy balance between sandal and shoe. These laser cut, white beauts, hit two trends in one…

Hannah’s Tulle Troubles // Ask Estelle

“Estelle! Please help! I have seen the most amazingly beautiful Tulle Skirt in this weeks copy of LOOK magazine. However, they give no mention as to where it is from or where I might be able to get my hands on my very own version of it.
I have a feeling they are going to be all the rage come spring and would love to be prepared for that first warm-enough day to wear one. The one I’ve seen is nude, to the knee with plenty of layers.
Instantly I thought of you … hope you can help?”

Of course I can help!

I saw it too and loved it, for those of you who haven’t here it is…

Very Parisian chic.

Valentino have a great range however if, like me, Valentino’s a little outside your price rang …how about this one from Coast?

Too much bling for your buck? Then try Vintage shops, markets or Ebay, I found some great bargains…

For those of you that love the look but want less fullness, then what about this sweeter than candyfloss skirt from Windsor?

And for those who, in contrast, want larger than life fullness simply add a slip…

Ask Estelle // Emma’s Winter Wardrobe Worries

“I’m having trouble finding a winter coat that’s suitable for the office and wearing to meetings, but one that also suits my style and I can wear out in the evenings. I really like the oversize suit jacket look, and am pretty tall so still want to get away with this look outside of my workplace. I don’t even know where to start… Any suggestions?”

So a smart but sassy coat, for work and play…

Single breasted, oversized coats are currently the hottest trend in outerwear.

Try checks…

With regards to your height, the taller the better! When it comes to this seasons’ mannish long coats, height is your accomplice…go for a camel/nude tone for a more elegant touch.

But sticking strictly to the brief what about this?

Poser Estelle // Paris problème de Amy

Amy asked Estelle:

“I’m going on a weekend break to Paris soon and I need your help! I’m after an outfit which is stylish, yet practical – obviously Paris is the fashion capital of the world but it’s also pretty cold at this time of year!

Must be suitable for walking around the city (skirts will need to be windproof for climbing the Eiffel Tower…)

Any suggestions?”

Bonjour Amy,

So you need something stylish yet substantial – well how about this outfit for Parisian chic…

Now you might think a Breton stripe top is too predictable but how about a skirt? Make it a pencil skirt like this one from Jaeger to avoid a Marilyn Monroe moment at the top of the Eiffel Tower…

Add thick tights for warmth and combine with a cropped jumper, try pale pink …

Or what about this one? Think French lace…oh la la

French dressing is all about being prim and polished, these shoes will finish the look off perfectly, accessories with red lips and nails…

Ayez un grand week-end Amy!

Ask Estelle // Clive’s Conundrum

“I’m having a bit of trouble with workwear this Autumn. All of my current work clothes are a bit too summery and as it has gotten much colder over the past week, I’m in need of some warm work gear. My office is quite casual so nothing too smart – Any suggestions?”

Right I think the key to this is layering, temperatures are often temperamental when it comes to offices.

Stripes are a classic, what about this pullover from Gap…

With this long-sleeved contrasting top worn underneath:

Cardigans sit comfortably between smart and casual, try a cashmere one for extra luxury…

No one wants a cold bottom either so how about some wool trousers? Combine with the long sleeve top from Uniqlo for a dreamy dress down look…

Ask Estelle // Cora’s crisis

“I’m looking for the perfect summer sandal. I’m not going on holiday anywhere this summer so I want something that’s practical and comfy for walking around in the city, blisters are not a good look! I’m thinking black, white or tan as the majority of my clothes are so colourful, as you know. Can you help?”

Well I also know you love Zara, so what about these? They fit the simple look you’re after whilst also being an absolute bargain!

Zara £9.99

Zara £9.99

However my only concern is that you may get blisters as they are not 100% leather so what about these:

Even leather can rub though until you wear them in a bit, but with vintage the hard work’s done for you, just slip on and enjoy….

Ask Estelle // Hannah’s predicament

“Graduation Season…
In just two short weeks I need to find a suitable outfit for my boyfriend’s graduation. My initial thought was a new dress – this being my usual go-to however, with an ever growing number of occasion dresses, perhaps I should venture into the trouser/maxi skirt trend. A couple of conditions; whatever I wear needs to be family/grandma friendly, and as it’s an all day event it needs to be comfy without compromising on style! Any advice?”

Right so according to the weather forecast the whole of July’s a heat wave! So we need a stylish, grandma friendly, non dress, occasion wear outfit that’s going to make you look hot rather than feel it…easy!

Virgo Lounge is a great place to find some instant glamour. This front split skirt is so ss13, whilst the length keeps it family friendly.

Don’t fancy doing the splits then the other must have skirt this ss13 is the full midi skirt. Plus your grandma will be sure to approve of this one as she probably wore it first time round…

Want comfort? Then Palazzo pants are a great alternative, wear with a tailored blazer, a Topshop beekeeper hat and espadrilles…

Ask Estelle // Emma’s Dilemma

Emma’s question:

“Practical but flattering swimwear?…. I have recently booked a surfing holiday (having never been before!) with my boyfriend and a group of friends. I want to pull off the beach-babe/ surfer-chic look however l am also slightly concerned an unexpected wave might wash my bikini right off and I will end up looking more like a beached whale… So, any ideas of something that will stay on but not make me look like a granny at the seaside? High waisted swimming bottoms are a no no… just too trendy!”

Every girl loves a holiday but most hate the dreaded bikini shopping which comes with it. Emma you’re not alone swimwear is a daunting subject at the best of times, for most people it’s simply about finding a bikini that looks good, no easy task. However Emma not only has to do this but find one which is as practical as it is flattering. Adhering to the ‘surfer-chic’ style brief as requested here is what I’ve found…

I think one pieces are probably your best bet for keeping your dignity whilst riding those *does best surfer impression* ‘totally rad’ waves…

Ask Estelle…

Just a short one today, I’m very busy fussing over what to wear tomorrow night whilst simultaneously planning some provoking questions to pose to the architects. Which brings me on nicely to a new page I have set up on my blog called ‘Ask Estelle’ (you’ll find it on the homepage – next to the Style Gallery tab). It’s a chance for you to put your style dilemmas to me and for me to solve them…I love a challenge! I also thought this would fit in nicely with Love Architecture Festival– any questions you want to know about Architects or architecture then let me know and I’ll find someone with the answer…

So go on, what are you waiting for?…
